About the project

I'm raising money to enable me to travel to Guyana for a month this summer to train local teachers with the charity LRTT (Limited Resource Teacher Training). Although some training is available to teachers in Guyana, there is no requirement for them to be qualified and many come straight into the profession after leaving secondary school. Along with a team of teachers from the US and the UK, I will be working with local teachers to improve student outcomes. The four week project will be based in the capital city, Georgetown, as well as in some of the most remote areas of the country.

What the money raised will cover: Food, accommodation, transport in the country and training and mentoring.

What I'm paying for: Flights, vaccinations, tourism and trips whilst I'm there and copious amounts of factor 50 sunscreen.

The UN’s 2015 Millennium Development Goals demand primary and secondary education for all – a demand that means more children are in school than ever before, stretching existing resources to breaking point. This coincides with the huge challenge of population growth: for example, in sub-saharan Africa, the school-going age population will rise by 24% between now and 2020. As countries work to meet this unprecedented explosion in demand, more and more highly-skilled teachers are needed.

LRTT equips a teacher to deliver engaging, challenging lessons, which develop thinking skills and problem-solving skills for all students. In turn, these students grow up to lead development within their own communities and nations: equipped to drive forward locally owned, sustainable development to change and improve lives. The developing world needs scientists, engineers, doctors, teachers, politicians. The leaders of 2050 are the children of 2015 – and every single one of their journeys will start with the same step, education. LRTT equips teachers to make sure that first step delivers the key skills needed for education to change those lives and outcomes.
