We support families bereaved in any circumstances and by any cause, including suicide, murder, RTA (sudden deaths) as well as long-term illness or life-limiting conditions (anticipated deaths).
We do this in individual family sessions, group sessions and socials. We use therapeutic creative activities; drawing, modelling and crafts based on a theme, such as memories, or to enable families to spend time in thought. There are many things that can complicate a child and family’s experience of bereavement and loss and impact on their ability to cope, including family relationship difficulties. Families and children who join our programmes are supported to identify any difficulties and communicate so they can help each other and learn coping strategies together.
“This has given us the time and space to sit as a family and explore what we are all thinking, rather than just thinking about ourselves.”
“There is an improvement in my relationship with my mum and brother and I can now share stuff with mum and this has resolved quite a few things through talking which I wasn’t able to do before”
Herefordshire is a sparsely populated large and rural county in which grieving families are additionally isolated by geography and circumstance. Our social events keep them involved in their community. Meeting others who understand helps to normalise feelings and families are encouraged to join in social activities and have fun, experience peer support and understanding.
“The social events have normalised the situation for both children and they have found the therapeutic sessions very useful. As my friends have backed off it is good to know that Phoenix are there for us giving us the space and time to be a family as a whole.”
“I have been struggling with the death of my wife and looking after the kids. Phoenix took the time to keep in touch with me until I was ready to come to the groups. Having made that first step and seeing the difference in my kids – and me – I’m so thankful”
With increased confidence in their own skills and with our support and encouragement they can face their future with hope, remembering the life of the person they love.
"We have been able to acknowledge and celebrate Dad's birthday and are planning our first holiday since his death. We couldn't have done this without ongoing support from Phoenix".
In mythology from around the world a Phoenix only appears when people are in need of hope - a tail feather plucked from a Phoenix glows in the dark, lighting the way ahead. Together we really can make a difference to people's lives - £3500 will ensure 10 families receive our support.
