LIFT OFF: Physical access for community cinema

LIFT OFF: Physical access for community cinema

Lucem House Community Cinema Plus+ is a volunteer-run, independent cinema and performance venue in St Helens town centre.

We did it!

On 22nd Aug 2017 we successfully raised £471 with 10 supporters in 56 days

Lucem House Community Cinema Plus+ is a volunteer run cinema catering for independent and world cinema and supporting special interest film clubs to programme their own genres.

With little provision locally for art house and independent films, take2film society was set up in 2013 to assess the appetite in St Helens for local provision.

After a successful pilot season in a local bar,  the current premises, a former church building  was offered by the YMCA  for the cinema to have a permanent home.  Volunteers gathered to improve the interior of the building and to build a permanent screen thus reducing reliance on costly equipment hire.

The volunteers have run two seasons at Lucem House and acquired a BFI grant for new video and projection equipment, which has improved the  quality of the screenings.  The challenge now for the volunteers is to provide access into, inside and around the building for wheelchair users.

Volunteers have examined all possible options to address the problem and a combination of ramps and lifts will be necessary to meet the need.  St Helens serves a community with diverse needs and we know that particular groups would visit the cinema and form clubs were the access issue resolved.

St Helens people also have a generous spirit and if everyone  who can afford to donate £2 to the fund does so we'll soon reach our target.  Join us in developing this vibrant community resource in the heart of St Helens.  Please support the campaign - and thank you for reading this.  We invite you to visit the cinema and support our screenings.
