To develop a greater range of free activities for local children, providing opportunities to play freely and feel part of the community

by Craig Judson in Sheffield, England, United Kingdom

MASKK’s mission is to work to enhance the lives of all children growing up in the Manor estates in Sheffield, labeled as deprived in the multiple index of deprivation, regardless of wealth, religion, gender, race, background or ability.

MASKK do this through providing:

  • affordable After School & Holiday Childcare that enables parents to work or train,
  • Short Breaks for children with disabilities providing an inclusion place to play while the parents/carers take a break,
  • a variety of Kids Clubs and Open access Activities such as our Active Kids, Lip Sync Battles and Picnics in the local parks and green spaces,
  • Family Stay and Plays during school holidays to bring people together,
  • parent craft mornings to give parents and carers a space for them,
  • and other activities the community require or request through regular consultation.

Volunteers

MASKK deliver a volunteer programme that supports local adults to gain experience, training and employment. Using playwork to bring together children and their parents to grow, develop and build community. MASKK provide all our volunteers with access to a range of training that prepares them for work while building their confidence and ambition. Some of our previous volunteers have then gone on to become teachers or social workers.

Our team of Playworkers are all community minded, many of the paid playworkers started as volunteers and many still offering their time for free to make all our activities posible. With local roots our team are able to engage and relate to the situations our families experience and so we are able to offer support.

Development

Our senior team are also involved in wider community developments such as supporting the upgrade of local play spaces (currently looking at two sites) and helping and plan and deliver community events such as our Community Bonfire every 5th of November that brings together over 7000 local people.

In 2016 MASKK worked with The Scout Association to create a new local scout group, over three years on we still offer back of house support to this growing and successful project that supports over 100 local children each year.

The money we hope to raise here will help us to start a new weekly activity for children aged 5&6 to meet a growing need and fill a gap. This will provide a weekly space to come and play, engage with positive role models and enjoy a meal. In the school holidays this will support the local Healthy Holidays offer that aims to ensure no child on free school meals goes hungry in the holidays.

Partnerships

MASKK is committed to partnership and everything we do is with others, through this and sharing resources we can do much more. We are members of the local Manor Assembly Forum, Everyone's Festival Team, Manor Action Group and a founding member of Sheffield Play Association.
MASKK support the universities by offering placements for sports and medical students, and we offer placements to the local sixth form.

In Summary

MASKK have been working in our community for 20 years and through that time have changed, grown and adapted to meet the needs of the community. We hope that people will be generous to enable this to continue to develop.  We thank everyone for their support be it financial or sharing the link to encourage others that can donate to do so.
