Lessons 4 Life is a not for profit organisation that teaches free first aid sessions in schools. Our innovative one day first aid programme includes practical sessions such as CPR, recovery position, wounds and bleeding, using a defibrillator and choking as well as interactive sessions on how to call for an ambulance, how to prioritise patients and how the ambulance service works. Pupils are often reluctant to perform first aid prior to our sessions one pupil said "I've never felt like I would know what to do" but after spending a day learning with us over 85% of pupils say they would be willing to perform first aid if needed, recently a pupil stated "The skills I have learnt today are amazing. I know that if I needed to I could save someone's life!"
When teaching in schools across Hull and Yorkshire we have discovered that many children have not been inside an ambulance, those that had been in the back of an ambulance it was when someone they care about was ill or injured. We have also discovered that many children are scared of going into an ambulance as they do not know what to expect. One pupil described to us "I wouldn't go in an ambulance if you needed to because you cant see inside, it's got no windows so I dont know what would happen in there"
We want to change this and we need your help to do so.
We have applied to The Aviva Community Fund to win £10,000 to buy an ambulance which we plan to convert into an interactive learning environment. As well as being kitted out with all the medical equipment you would expect to find in an ambulance we plan to include exciting, innovate and interactive games about all things first aid and ambulances. By spending positive time in the 'Aviva Ambulance' children will be more familiar and therefore more relaxed if they ever have to travel in an ambulance in an emergency.
