Leighton Buzzard Hockey Club (LBHC) is a not for profit sports club that has been established in Bedfordshire since 1901. LBHC has a clear vision: to provide the opportunity for all individuals in Bedfordshire to try, practice, and enjoy coming together through hockey, regardless of ability, age or financial background. Our aim is to provide a safe environment within our local community for young people, and all our members, to socialise and to channel their energy into sport in order to enhance their physical and mental well being. Our belief is that hockey can help bring our community together and enrich the lives of those living within Bedfordshire, and its borders.
Since LBHC was founded in 1901 we have never had a place to call home beside our pitch at Vandyke Upper School, Leighton Buzzard. In recent years we have seen a big increase in our junior and older membership, as well as the introduction of our disability programme ‘Yes we can’. Historically, junior members, the older generation, and those with disabilities within Bedfordshire have been unable to fully partake in all that hockey offers as travel has been required, preventing key groups from being able to fully enjoy the physical and mental enrichment of sport. We aspire to provide a safe, close at hand clubhouse so members of all ages and abilities, advantages and disadvantages can come together on a level playing field.
To make this a reality, in 2018 the Club was gifted a second-hand facility by a local development site which we can use to call our new home. To date we have raised funds of £45,000 in order to secure the movement of the building. It is now in place by the pitch but we need additional funds to renovate the building so that it is fit for purpose. Some, but not all of the things we need to do include:
- Modernise the access routes to provide for full accessibility to the building, including moving and changing doors and installing ramps and handrails.
- Fitting out the internal part of the building with lighting and heating
- Fit a suspended ceiling
- Install a purpose built kitchen
- Provide drainage, water supplies, family friendly and accessible toilet facilities
Completing this clubhouse project will enable us to develop, grow and become the central focus point for our community to come together through hockey. We have an opportunity with the rapidly expanding housing in the area to move the club to the next level and importantly to provide a fantastic facility to connect all the new members of our community with those that have been here for many years. Our club is already hosting tournaments to bring together teams from across Bedfordshire (Luton, Shefford & Sandy, etc) and this clubhouse will provide a central facility for the community to bond and grow.
How can you help....
Any donation, big or small, will bring us one step closer to making this a reality. To recognise and remind everyone that facilities such as this cannot be created without the fantastic support of the community, a supporters’ wall will be established inside the clubhouse.
Please give generously and help us ensure hockey is accessible to all in Leighton Buzzard!
