A further £2,500 would allow us to buy a nut milk machine, nut butter maker, and an orange juicer!

Lavemill Larder is thrilled to announce the opening of their zero-waste shop in Troon, the first of its kind in Ayrshire.

Using alternatives to plastic packaging, and with refill options on offer, Lavemill Larder are eco-conscious and are encouraging customers to rethink their plastic shopping habits.

As we have all become more aware of the environmentally damaging impacts of single use plastic, we are looking for more sustainable ways to live.

  • There may now be around 5.25 trillion macro and microplastic pieces floating in the open ocean - weighing up to 269,000 tonnes.
  • There are over 150 plastic bottles littering each mile of UK beaches.
  • 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution annually.

We need to something about this, and we need to start now.

To enable this Lavemill Larder will offer unpackaged dry goods, loose grains, herbs and spices, ecological toiletries and lifestyle products.

Who Are We?

The team behind Lavemill Larder are Andrew Hunter and stepdaughter Chloe Ness with help and support of wife and mum Dr Ainsley Coats.

Andrew and Chloe in the new shop!

By taking small, sustainable steps to help the environment we can all make a difference! We might not get it right every step of the way, but with your help and support we can make a positive impact on our environment for our future. We want to provide as many resources as we can to help and inspire you to make whatever changes you can.

Please join us on this journey to help make sustainable changes in day to day life.

About Us

We live on a small holding where we grow a lot of our own vegetables and raise our chickens who roam free with our other animals, including dogs, cats, horses, alpaca, goats and sheep.

We recycle and reuse as much as possible and compost all our animal waste for use on the farm. We try and buy goods that are ecological and sustainable but it is difficult to source eco friendly, sustainable, responsible or vegan products locally.

Lavemill Larder will stock as many of these as we can.

Location

We will be located at 20 West Portland Street in Troon (at the red pin!) right beside the Wok Inn. The shop is already pretty bare which is thankfully the look we were going for so there isn't going to be much renovation needed in terms of moving walls or changing wallpaper. Because of this we are hoping to be open by the end of November!

What will the money be used for?

£1,600 will buy 20 gravity dispensers

£400 will buy shop fittings - shelving, storage units, tables

£3,000 will buy a self-weigh scale and till

How does it work?

Customers will be able to bring their own containers to fill up their cupboards with sustainable, locally sourced produce. Pour washing liquid, toilet cleaner and surface spray straight into your own containers. Choose herbs, dried fruit, baking products, oils, vinegars, cereals and seeds in quantities you need, and only pay for what you take, not the packaging! There will even be fresh eggs laid by the Lavemill farm reared chickens!

This is what the shop will look similar to - Going Green in Wantage, England.

Customers can also look forward to purchasing ecological toiletries including reusable makeup wipes, bamboo cotton buds and toothbrushes. There will be unpackaged soap bars, refill shampoos and locally made eco sanitary products.

In future we hope to host workshops and classes to help us all learn how to be more environmentally friendly.
