Ben's Centre began almost 25 years ago as a sanctuary for street drinkers in Sheffield's town Centre. Opened by Ben Sherman, who, at that time was the centre's policeman; he recognised the issues facing the people who suffered from the misuse of alcohol and the futility of arresting and fining them.
He opened the very first Ben's Centre, a place for them to call home and receive the help they needed. The Charity has continued and thrived since those early days and now offers a range of services to the homeless and those entangled in a life of drug and alcohol use as well as other traumas that can stunt a persons growth and continually create obstacles in the way of a positive life.
In early 2020 Ben's Centre was in the throws of expansion, we were running daily outreach patrols out on the streets, visiting clients at their homes and getting to grips with the deep trauma they had historically endured with mental health support as well as providing the day centre for them to be themselves. Here they can be welcomed and supported with their issues in a non judgemental and friendly atmosphere. regular hot meals, key working, activities and day trips all added to the positivity and the list of assets that our clients could call their own.
Then Covid 19 hit...
Ben's Centre was forced to react to the pandemic with new ways of working, flexing with the government guidelines and still managing to support our clients. We found our feet and even managed to build on our existing client list but social distancing still meant that we were unable to open the doors to our day centre.
We are now approaching a relaxing of the lockdown and in order to open Ben's Centre fully we need new premises, a larger space that we can put in social distancing rules and create a forever home. We have grand plans to expand even further but need the space to do it, can you help to give our clients the sanctuary they need to thrive in these uncertain times?
