I come from an air forces family - RNZAF and RAF, and lost my uncle Harry, NZ Expeditionary Force, on Crete in WWII. The Spitfire was a fabulous aircraft. Iconic. So too, the pilots who flew her and other RAF aircraft. Pilots and aircrew, thousands of who lost their lives or were seriously injured defending their country. Given the Commonwealth and wider International nature of aircrew during WWII and the Battle of Britain in particular, the Spitfire is a wonderful symbol of people of different nations, ethnicities, religions, and beliefs coming together for a common and good cause in the defense of fundamental human values.
