Nancy Astor - what a woman. For me, she's special as the first MP to take the Plumage Bill seriously, and to drive it through Parliament as one of her first missions - ending decades of male foot-dragging and vested plumage trade interest. The fashion for 'bird hats' would soon become a thing of the past. I'm also fascinated to learn more about the process of crowd-funding a statue, as I'm about to launch a campaign for a statue of Emily Williamson, founder of the RSPB, to stand in her home at Fletcher Moss Park in Didsbury, Manchester. Having written a book about the female founders of Britain's biggest conservation charity, this is a project close to my heart. I'm running the campaign with Andrew Simcock, the man behind the Emmeline Pankhurst statue unveiled in Manchester last year - a man who knows how to get things done! So how could I miss the unveiling of Nancy? Proud to be there.
