Where did it all start?
In 2012, after searching for suitable compression wear, founder and Managing Director Paul Bromley began to question how beneficial off-the-peg compression wear could really be for an individual and decided to research the capabilities of custom made garments.
S, M and L sizings and standardised materials can only offer limited benefits to an individual. He believed that if the material was bespoke fitted and the correct mercury pressures applied where it counts, then true performance, recovery and health benefits could be achieved..... He was right.
Following further research employed through Loughborough University, Nottingham Trent University and UEL he began working on concepts, sourcing materials, hiring seamstresses and developing the technology. In 2014, following testing undertaken with Sheffield Steelers and other high profile teams, Kurio 3D Compression Ltd began trading and has never looked back.
Our garments undergo constant testing and research [with at least 3 university studies ongoing at any one time!] and the extent of the benefits of our #Truecompression garments are still being discovered all the time.
What do our Garments offer?
The range now includes Performance, Recovery and Travel garments which are specifically designed to do the following:
- Fit the body, whatever size and shape the individual may be.
- Aid removal of lactic acid following exercise.
- Increase blood velocity to speed muscle recovery.
- Drastic reduction in muscle soreness.
- The material employed wicks away moisture to keep the body at a stable 37oC, employs silver anti bacterial treatment to reduce odour, thereby also reducing the need for frequent washing.
- The reinforced flat seam construction is extremely strong and reduces chafing.
We currently offer leggings and calf guards and are in the process of launching our full compression tops as well using our newly developed booth scanner.
We have fulffilled orders for Premiership and Championship football clubs, as well as Hockey players, gymnasts, cyclists, olympians and paralympians to date.
How it works?
Using state of the art scanning technology we create a complete 3D scan of the body with an accuracy to within 1 millimetre. This is all done within 45 seconds using either our fixed booth or portable hand scanner.
From this we employ our own in house processing software to develop a 2D pattern. This is printed to be used as a template for cutting the material to the required shape.
Once the material is prepped, our seamstresses use state of the art machinery to stitch them into the final garment, apply our logo and the individual's details into the waist band. This includes their initials and the type of garment, helping to maintain the bespoke approach and adding that personal touch.
All software processing, prepping and manufacturing is done in our own Nottinghamshire based factory, one of England's original textiles hubs. Utilizing the expertise we have locally we ensure every aspect of the process is done in house and consistent quality is paramount.
It is important to us to use British manufacturing skills and through modern technology we are able to make use of trades few thought would ever come back to our area.
Where we are going?
We have focused to date on Premiership and Championship football teams, sports clubs, International Hockey players, Olympians and elite athletes which requires our staff to travel and use the hand scanners to harvest the data needed for the garments. This is only really feasible for orders of 20+ garments.
Over the past 12 months we have developed a scanning booth which means instead of using our labour intensive hand scanner we can now duplicate the booths and place them in locations up and down the country for individuals to be scanned and order products through well known retail outlets and independent stores.
Although our turnover has doubled year on year for the last three years, in order to extend our reach to the wider public we need to create scanning hubs.
Through raising money we can build and market a series of booths which will enable us to do the following:
- Offer our garments to amateur athletes and all members of the public nationwide by placing booths in sports retailers within chosen urban hubs.
- Provide private scanning sessions with scans taking no more than 45 seconds per person.
- Process resulting orders in house to be sent to your door anywhere in the country.
- Showcase our state of the art garments through nationwide exposure and retail partnerships.
- Focus staff time on further research and on going product development, instead of constant travelling and scanning.
The sky is the limit?
Once out into the mainstream marketplace, our technology could be applied to all manner of applications and it is our eventual aim to apply our scanning technology to the fashion industry and to the healthcare market. The ways in which Kurio could disrupt and transform these markets are being discovered and mapped more and more every day!
With your help we can continue to grow our reach and bring state of the art sports tech to all.
The manner of ways we can transform people's lives for the better through bespoke wear are endless.... our journey is only just getting going.
Don't just take our word for it.... Please donate, get yourself some leggings and find out for yourself what #TrueCompression really can do for all!
