Help us raise funds for medieval combat equipment to encourage an active lifestyle for all ages and to repair church vandalism.

by Lee Warden in Norwich, England, United Kingdom

Knights Tower are a grassroots full contact medieval combat team located in Norwich, UK. We want to encourage people of all ages and abilities to live a healthy, active life through the practice and study of medieval combat. As an inclusive, non-profit sports group we want to provide everyone with the opportunity to take part in the sport of Historic Medieval Battles (HMB), either with padded equipment or with full steel armour and blunted steel weapons.

Similar to boxing, the sport encourages overall fitness, increased hand-eye coordination, sportsmanship, and an opportunity to de-stress. However, we believe that medieval combat has a wealth of educational, cultural and social benefits which are distinctive to HMB. It has proven to be a fantastic way to meet new people as well as providing a unique way to connect with global and local history. Getting kitted out in full plate armour and competing in a 5 vs 5 melee is certainly one way of understanding why armour was so important!

So far we have been funding the group ourselves, making what we can and buying what we can't; but with more people wanting to get involved we need help to purchase equipment so that everyone can take part.

We are temporarily renting a deconsecrated church in Norwich which is being vandalised almost daily, with rocks being thrown through medieval stained glass windows. We want to help repair the damage and install specialized metal grating over the windows to protect them. Indoor space is essential to ensure that training can take place whatever the weather, and being based in a medieval church while practicing medieval combat is a fantastic combination. The church is still on the market and if a buyer rents it we would have to leave the space. To rent it for 1 year ourselves we would have to raise £17,500! This would be an incredible (though unlikely) opportunity that would allow us to host much larger groups and benefit the community on a more permanent basis.

Ultimately, with training and support, we hope to help members take part in medieval combat tournaments and competitions both nationally and internationally.
