Just over 4 years ago armed with a medical grade scalpel and a sheet of paper I began create wonderful bespoke
papercuts. First typographical designs then as confidence grew hand drawn designs often inspired by books I read
as a child. I was one of only a handful of papercutters in the UK at the time. Growing from a tiny dinning table hobby
business, to the successful studio based business it is today. The early days were spent at innumerable small local
craft fairs until I decided an online presence through social media and a website was a better fit. I now have customers
across the world including America and Australia, returning time after time for bespoke cuts speaking volumes of the
quality and customer service I strive to provide.
Kingfisher has now grown to the point where I can no longer keep up with demand through hand cutting alone and
have retail offers I can not fulfil without making major changes to the business model. I currently offer a set
range of handcut designs that are able to be personalised with one off pieces, new cuts and art style cuts being sold
at my popular market night events.
Investing in a Laser Cutter will mean I can produce a large number of reproductions of my papercuts. I will be able
to take a high resolution scan of my cuts and with a little computer magic prepare it to be reproduced exactly by
laser in large quantities. By using a scanned cut rather than drawing I will retain the hand drawn, hand cut and handmade
aspect of my work that my customers love. Within a month I will have a large enough stock built up to supply retail
outlets whilst still allowing time to fulfil bespoke orders from the core of the business.
The laser will allow me to develop new product lines, creating prototypes quickly and changing designs until they are
perfect. I will have full control over quality and costs and will not need to rely on other people and their equipment,
paying towards their profit margin. I will be able to experiment with new materials and respond quickly to customer buying
trends while keeping costs low. I will, as a result have a much faster order turnaround.
The more I raise in pledges the better equipment I will be able to order which will in turn improve the turnaround
times and overall customer experience and volume capacity.
