Key Enterprises (K|E) provide supported activities for adults with learning disabilities, mental health problems or acquired brain injuries. Attending K|E provides a routine, sense of purpose, regular access to support and the opportunity to develop skills and confidence within a safe environment. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdown has greatly impacted the charity sector. At a time where we are facing a significantly reduced income due to service restrictions, we want to ensure that we are able to deliver the highest standard of support possible during these difficult times.
The main goal of this crowdfunder is to help invest in technology that will bring our service users together and tackle isolation. We want to supply at least 6 of our more isolated service users with tablets and mobile data plans allowing them to access video calls and online educational media to maintain engagement during covid-19 lockdown. At around £200 each, we have set an initial target of £1200 to help us achieve this goal with scope for funding further projects should we exceed this.
This technology doesn't come cheap and in many cases we would like to offer a data-plan for those who don't have access to a WiFi connection which can incur increased costs as well.
Our vision is a society in which those with additional needs are supported to reach their potential, lead productive lives, and have a real sense of belonging. Our mission is to:
Improve skills – Provide supported opportunities for service users to develop new skills or maintain existing ones in a practical workshop setting.
Reduce isolation – Offer a supportive, dignified space where people feel comfortable and valued, provide opportunities for social participation and widen horizons with new experiences.
Increase well-being – Contribute towards the greater well-being of service users by providing a quality service and linking up with partner organisations to provide specialist support for identified needs.
All of these feed into our wider aim of increasing meaningful opportunities for those who use our services.
Without us, service users would experience isolation, reduced opportunities and experiences and a poorer quality of life. Several service users have expressed that attending K|E has provided them with a way of contributing to society in a meaningful way. We provide a unique service that mixes adults with differing diagnoses and complexities. Only 6% of adults with a learning disability have access to work. K|E enables people to engage in activities within a real work setting, providing opportunities and experiences found nowhere else. Creating an environment to socialise safely allows friendships to be built, and reduces the isolation that so many of the adults we work with would otherwise experience. Having access to a social network can increase happiness and confidence, reduce loneliness and in doing so, reduce linked health risks such as depression, high blood pressure and a higher mortality risk.
We run seven practical working departments where service users can develop existing skills or learn new ones, leave their comfort zone, access new experiences and make a positive contribution to the wider community.
Bicycle Maintenance - We sell, service and maintain bikes from our workshop and sometimes at pop-up locations around the North Tyneside area. We produce tutorial videos via YouTube to share basic maintenance tips.
Catering - The kitchen is the hub of K|E, it’s a busy and welcoming area that provides a daily two course cooked lunch and refreshments throughout the day for service users and staff.
Furniture Renovation - The department features a high-quality restoration service, carefully stripping down products before mending, varnishing or painting them. Service users can create their own items and learn how to care for them.
Horticulture - Horticulture is a busy department carrying out gardening work within the community around Tyne and Wear in both domestic and commercial settings. We also grow vegetables that are used by the catering department.
Maintenance - From tidying up grounds, to mending and decorating, this department is handy and takes on a range of tasks both on site and in the community.
Metalwork -Metalwork is a vibrant and creative department with an industrial feel. Service users are encouraged to be creative whilst learning basic metal working skills producing a range of items from railings and hanging baskets to unique sculptures.
Woodwork - We make a wide variety of items including bird boxes, seats, benches, bird feeders, garden sheds and other bespoke pieces. Service Users can also design and create their own items.
Providing the support we do is not without cost. At a time of shrinking personal budgets and reduced government support, our service users are more vulnerable than ever. Key Enterprises provide quality, safe and value driven support that costs a tiny fraction of the interventions we prevent through our services.
For £40, someone can receive a full day of support within a safe and welcoming environment, learn a new skill, enjoy themselves and receive a cooked, two-course meal. They can gain access to emotional support, signposting and a break from isolation.

£40 funds a full day placement
£160 can support a service user for an entire month
