As a foster carer I have always promoted education to all young people who were in my care. I have been to University twice myself and was the first and only person in my family to do so. I understand the issues that these young people may face coming from an disadvangted group living and raised in an inner London Borough, couple with the peer pressure and rise in youth crime.
Aged 16-21 many young people leave care but are not ready to live on their own. Foster Carers are not funding in the same way when a child reaches 18 so many children have to leave the accomodation. This often impacts on their education as they want to study but need to be seen and supported as young adults.
Foster children are less likely to finish or go on to higher education than their peers who have not been living away from home.
Young people leaving care are among the most vulnerable members of society and they don’t always know how to find safe accommodation. They may have no qualifications, financial stability, or family support. However, this project aims to provide support, stable home at a crucial time in a vulnerable person’s life.
The aim of the scheme is to offer young people are leaving foster care the opportunity to live in supported accomodation of an approved person who will support them through their educational paths whilst help them prepare for independent living.
The supported accomodation is not only to provide academic support, but life skills, social safety lessons and driving lesson which the young person can earn as well as emotional and physical support.
The money raise will build and provide two large en-suite rooms for 2 young people for up to 2 years, who are in education.
I am looking for funding to be raised, however the funding will be returned over a 15 year period, so I am asking people to invest in this project, whilst also ensuring that any money you invest will be return within the 15 year period. As the accomodation will be affordable for the young person this is how the investment will be returned to those funding the project.
