About Me:

Hello! I am a musician, composer and educator based in Glasgow, Scotland. I play Double Bass with award-winning contemporary folk group Breabach whilst also running my own solo project and working as an in-demand session artist on the folk and jazz scenes. My debut album Strand was released in 2017 to critical acclaim and in June 2020 I was a winner of the 'In Tune With Nature' competition in association with Scottish National Heritage/Fèis Rois.

“Mood, tone and tempo shift as constantly as the tide.” ★★★★ (The Scotsman)

“an inviting, contrasting weave of warm, incisive melody and textural detail” (London Jazz News)

The Album:

As of August 2020 I am in the final process of composing material, which will form my new album 'Torus' - my first full length release since 2017. At its core my writing is inspired by the Scottish folk tradition of melodies, songs and stories. This is something I have a real passion for and have been heavily involved with for over a decade. I strive to present these tune forms, rhythms and melodic elements on an unconventional canvas, merging them with contemporary jazz harmony, experimental rock and metal textures, ambient soundscapes, improvisation and unusual instrumentation. I write the music that excites me and I hope it will be intriguing and challenging for the listener.

Thematically, I have looked at our connectedness to and disconnect from nature as my main source of inspiration. As a city dweller but also a keen outdoors enthusiast, I continually look at the contrasts in urban and wild landscapes; our ancient and modern interactions with nature; anthropogenic interference and our perception of the rate of change in the natural environment. I am creating a soundscape that reflects and contrasts these observations; exploring the full spectrum of dynamics, flowing melodies, jarring rhythms, expansiveness and density.

The record will feature some of my favourite cross-genre musicians, including Scott Mackay (Drums), Signy Jakobsdottir (Percussion), Ben Macdonald (Electric Guitar), Jack Smedley (Fiddle), Angus Lyon (Accordion), John Lowrie (Keyboards), Deirdre Graham (Gaelic Vocals) and Norman Willmore (Saxophone). I'll be performing on Electric/Double Bass and Synths. Engineering the record is acclaimed producer Euan Burton (Siobhan Miller, Kris Drever, Seafarers), someone with a vast breadth of knowledge across numerous musical worlds.

The album artwork comes from the wonderful artist and print maker Alice Strange.
