A new and truly captivating piece of children’s theatre from a brilliant new talent. Help us get it out there!

Toby Thompson is a young performance poet from Bath and a very rare talent. In 2017 the egg theatre, a dedicated theatre for children in Bath, supported Toby to create a new show for young audiences. The result is “I Wish I Was a Mountain”, a truly innovative piece of theatre based on a fairy tale by Herman Hesse.

Toby performed a very early version of “I Wish I Was a Mountain” at the egg in October to much critical acclaim. Excerpts from the performance can be seen in the video above. Children loved it and venues were immediately clamouring to book it. It's a rare thing to have this much advance interest in booking a new show and at the egg theatre we’re very excited at the prospect of producing it.

Let's get this show on the road...

The egg theatre wants to help Toby finish his piece, and get it in front of as many children as possible. Our plan is to raise funding that will allow Toby to finish writing the piece, cover production costs, and take it out to two children's festival in May, followed by a national tour in the Autumn.

In order to do this the egg theatre needs to raise funding. Our plan is to do this through a combination of voluntary support and a grant from Arts Council England. As a start, we’ll be able to make great use of any funds we raise through this pitch to fund Toby and Director Lee Lyford to finish the piece and present it at two of the UK's leading festivals: Brighton International Festival and Spark Children's Festival in Leicester. (So your donation, however small, is guaranteed to make a difference!)

...and your donation can make a big difference to the rest of our funding

If we can achieve a realistic target of around £5,000 this would also provide much needed match-funding to strengthen our case to Arts Council England for more funds, and a bigger tour and an even better show! If we can do that, it would enable a multi-venue national tour in the Autumn – which we know is possible as the egg has already has more than a dozen venues expressing an interest in booking the piece.

Children will be inspired by Toby’s wonderful work and this is the opportunity to help that happen

We invite you to support this project in any way you can. Every gift will make a big difference and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve helped a young artist get a really great piece of theatre out into the world.

The egg theatre, which is part of Theatre Royal Bath,  is a registered charity. We care deeply about nurturing talented artists to make great theatre for children, however obtaining funding to produce and tour this type of theatre is exceptionally challenging. Toby is an outstanding young talent who has grown up with the egg, and we would love to support Toby by producing this show at the start of his career.

Please help us achieve this by pledging whatever you can now.

With huge thanks!
