by Sarah Corcoran in London, England, United Kingdom

We did it
On 17th June 2018 we successfully raised £4,100 with 62 supporters in 42 days

To purchase a new minibus to enable us to continue to support and help reach the isolated vulnerable and disabled people in Islington.

New stretch target

Any additional funding will be used to fund groups of young people from the local community to access the activities on offer at Islington Boat Club.

With a minibus that is over 15 years old and literally falling apart we need to raise another £4,000 towards the shortfall we have to purchase a new bus. This bus will allow us to continue to support and help reach the isolated vulnerable and disabled people in Islington and the surrounding areas.

The minibus we require is an accessible 17 seater.

Why this minibus is so important; The adventure has begun at Islington Boat Club. Our vision is to provide watersports and outdoor activities that are accessible to people with special needs and older less able/mobile adults, as well as the wider community who support them. The fully accessible minibus will allow us to reach the hard to reach, offering groups that have transport issues the opportunity to participate in our activities. As well as offering off site trips to our youth group.

The overall benefits of taking part in watersports and outdoor activities are invaluable. Our inclusive activities give participants the opportunity to try something new in a safe and exciting environment. These benefits include:

  • Taking part in a range of new and exciting activities
  • Confidence building by pushing boundaries
  • Working towards greater independence
  • Building self-confidence, increased self-worth
  • Reinforcing and learning new life skills
  • Learning new sports activity that can turn into a hobby to participate in regularly
  • Accessing a multitude of social communication opportunities

We want to continue to extend the opportunities on offer at IBC to a greater number of people with disabilities in Islington and beyond, challenging and developing individual’s perception of themselves through new activities where a level playing field exists for all.

The total cost of a new bus is £24,000; £12,000 of this has been pledged by The Variety Club of Great Britain and additional £5,000 from The Bernard Sunley Foundation, £3,000 from a private donation.  Leaving a shortfall of £4,000.
