To provide 1-2-1 intensive mentoring for young people who are involved with the criminal justice system or excluded from mainstream schools.

by Pete Stanley in South Croydon, England, United Kingdom

Did you know that there are 1,500 children locked up by the state in England at a cost to the taxpayer of £1/3 Billion per year. Ment4 has a number of years experience that shows that a positive adult role model can transform a young persons life.

There were 1,465 children in England securely detained in 2018, of whom 873 were held in youth justice settings, 505 were in mental health wards and 87 were in secure children’s homes for their own welfare. However, this number is likely to be an underestimate due to gaps in the data.

It cost £588,015 a year for a child to stay in a secure mental health setting.

£210,000 a year for a child to stay in a secure children's home.

£160,000 a year to keep a child in a secure training centre.

£76,000 a year to keep a child in a young offender institution.

At Ment4 we provide a six month intensive 1-2-1 mentoring programme for young people caught up in the criminal justice system, excluded from school or involved with Social Services in the London Borough of Croydon.

Croydon is the London Borough with the largest population of young people in the capital. In the last 9 years Ment4 has helped transformed over 220 young peoples lives. Ment4's  mentoring programme last between 4-6 months and costs between £3-5,000.

At Ment4 we are delighted that we have helped so many young people, but we also know there is a generation across the UK that need a Ment4 mentor and a stable adult role model in their lives.

What people say about Ment4:-

"You have helped me since the beginning.  Whenever I have needed something you have been there. You haven't given up on me, you have been very kind. You treat me with respect, you don't judge me.  It's been good being with you..." Young Person

"You kept all my secrets…did I tell you any? You became a valuable member of the family. You encouraged me. You are much better than the other agencies, who were rubbish. When you came to pick me up and I refused, I later really regretted it. I like my new school and I can go to college and then university, can’t I? I want to go to the USA; to California, Chicago and New York." Young Person

"I can't put into words how many lovely things you have done for me and my family! You’ve always gave me that bit of support that I've needed. It's a shame we don't have more people in the world like you! PS you shall be the first to know when I pop!" Young Person

"I think that you have made a huge change in my life, you have been so nice and calm I really am going to miss you You’ve been the best mentoring I ever couldn’t ask for more. Young Person

"You were brilliant. You came round a lot and we got to know you. She is doing well. And we don’t have to see Social Services any more.” Mother
