Having a job when leaving prison is the most effective way to stop someone re-offending and ending back in prison. In the UK at the moment over 40% of people (men and women) will be back inside within 12 months of their release. We think this statistic needs improving on and we need to encourage more people to rehabilitate and to go straight upon release.
Based on five years of working in prisons across Southern England we believe that Inside Out Conversions is a new way to train people while they are serving a custodial sentence and to help them develop the skills they need to secure a job on release from prison.
We will train prisoners to convert commercial vehicles into campervans and mobile homes, which we will sell in order to fund ongoing training. Trainees will learn basic maintenance and construction skills, will work as part of a project team, will improve their reading and writing and will get employment-readiness support. We will help them find jobs in construction, maintenance and other relevant industries: and give them a chance to start a new legal life on the outside.
How You Can Help
We need £10,000 to buy a second hand Transit-style vehicle and to cover the costs of our first conversion. With a completed prototype campervan and trained prisoners we can secure additional funding, take orders for new vehicles and grow the training programme to support more people into work.
