Independent bookshop needs your help

October Books, Southampton's only independent, community, cooperative, radical bookshop, needs your help to pay our rent by 24th March

We did it
On 16th March 2017 we successfully raised £3,350 with 171 supporters in 14 days

New stretch target

What an amazing response, thank you to everyone who has donated so far, we really apreciate your support. We have reached our initial target already, which covers our shortfall in rent and so now we would like to set a stretch target of £5000. This extra money will help cover the costs of upgrading our ageing cataloguing software (last updated in 1996 we believe!), point of sale software, computers and phone system. We will also spend the extra on building maintenance, repairing our roller shutter, broken windows and providing insulation (it is mighty chilly in winter). So please keep sharing our story.

Do you want to keep an independent bookshop in Southampton? October Books has been providing books to schools, the universities, local residents and visitors in the city for 40 years. We also stock a wide range of greeting cards, many from local artists and also a range of Fairtrade, organic, vegetarian, vegan and gluten free foods and low impact cleaning products. Following the handover to a new team to run the shop  in July 2016 a lot of bad debt has been cleared but this has left us struggling to pay our full rent this quarter, which is due on the 24th March. We need your help to raise £2500 before 24th March.

In the short term you can donate a one off payment here, via Paypal, or in store or please just come and buy more from us. We are the bookshop that sells toilet roll! Medium term perhaps you would like to set up a monthly Standing Order, if so please e-mail jaquie@octoberbooks.org for details.

We are having support from The Hive, a cooperative business advice and support programme, to develop a strategic plan for the future of October Books, as we know in the long term we need to increase sales and income and/or pay less rent.  Future plans may be to rent a cheaper premises, collaborate with another organisation in our existing premises or to purchase a property. If you have knowledge and expertise in these areas and would like to help we would be interested in hearing from you.

If you can't afford to donate then please come and support us as a volunteer. You can help in the shop, help with DIY tasks, take books to sell at events , help promote us via social media, help update our second hand book sales and many other opportunities. Please drop us a line at info@octoberbooks.org if you can offer time.
