Help to increase the wellbeing of people with dementia and mental health conditions.

by Matthew Inniss in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom

  • 'Pickle, wake up, I've had a dream you are doing aerobics in an old people's home' were the words that brought Fitnniss Wellbeing in Care to life at 3am one morning in November 2011. Since then myself and my team have delivered over 15,000 exercise and mobility sessions in care settings across the Midlands and have recently extended our services to include massage therapy, African drumming and creative arts sessions. Our main aim is to increase the wellbeing of every person we meet, service users, staff and visiting family members alike. The entire team is trained to differentiate their sessions so that they are accessible to all ages and abilities which ensures that no person is excluded from what we do. Our approach to enhancing wellbeing is multi faceted and we strongly believe as much in the power of the social element of bringing people together, as we do in the content of our sessions, we therefore create an atmosphere of shared enjoyment using music as a stimulus and games as motivational tools. We believe that every person has the right to feel as well as they can, and with our interventions people are experiencing feelings of increased energy, improved strength and mobility, improved mood and increased social interactions. Our long term aim is to be able to offer our services to homes across the UK, increasing wellbeing in care through activity, no matter you age or ability.
