iDID Adventure is an award-winning social organisation promoting the positive use of adventure sports to improve resilience, well-being & confidence amongst marginalised individuals. We have a great team of volunteers and 3 part time members of staff who are all passionate about helping people with additional needs.
We currently run a inclusive climbing club for 14 - 25yr olds which has been amazingly popular and we have been inundated with families and organisations that are desperate for a club that caters to younger people who have additional needs so we want to start a new club for 8-14yr olds but based on the same concept. We already have a waiting list for if/when we get the funding to start this project.
Nearly everyone knows someone who has either been a victim of bullying, have low self-confidence, additional mental health needs or additional physical needs and its these young people who our activities help. We hope that by raising funds we can pay for a supervisor, instructor and training for them and volunteers. We would also like to offer reduced rates to ensure that no matter your financial situation you are able to attend this club.
We will also use some of the funds to help develop training techniques and teach sign climb system to those with hearing impairments. We understand that people with sensory needs find it hard to achieve nation climbing standards so we are also designing our own standards for people with additional needs so they can continue to learn and set individual goals for themselves.
Its fantastic to see young people with low confidence at the start of the term blossom into confident climbers. Feedback from current course:
"It's an amazing opportunity for the young people. I've sat and watched them all grow. Some from quiet nervous individuals to ones smiling laughing and pushing themselves. They have grown in confidence in themselves not just the climbing. A big thank you for giving them the opportunity to grow in more ways than one. Your volunteers are kind, understanding and extremely supportive to both youngsters, the young leader and each other. I for one cannot thank you enough."
"This is an excellent initiative and gives children an opportunity to climb alongside others who are similar in their needs."
Our inclusive club will provide an empowering environment for young people to positively engage in activities that reduce social isolation, increase self-worth, and build resilience. Through our clubs, young people gain an opportunity to escape everyday stressors, take risks in a safe environment, and importantly... have fun. For young people who have additional needs they can't just join a normal club they need specialized ones that can cater to them and we ask for your support in achieving our aims:
"My daughter has literally climbed out of depression, making new friends and, with the help of her iDID mentors, has made strides both physically and mentally to emerge from a very dark cloud. We couldn't recommend it enough."
