Hi, and I hope you and your families are keeping safe and well.
We lost a dear friend and colleague a few days ago. Gavin Bennett was one of life’s true gems; he meant so much to so many people and we’re all struggling to come to terms with his loss.
Gavin touched many lives in many roles. He was a great father, husband, brother and son; a champion of others and a truly great friend. He worked tirelessly for others, always ready to listen to and take on board their problems and, crucially, always willing to take action to help. He helped countless colleagues in his role as a Trade Union representative – so many are grateful for his kindness, his respect and for his unrelenting support in helping them with the issues they faced. Because of Gavin, no one had to face these issues alone. That was Gavin; always there for you.
Gavin was always looking out for people, and not just at work. He worked hard in his community too. He was passionate about football and coached youngsters at Gateshead Redheugh Football Club. We laughed earlier today about his fundraising efforts for the club by doing the Great North Run. We recalled the phone call the next day when he couldn’t get in to the office because he could barely walk, and how he swore blind he would never do the run again. Of course he did, the very next year and for the same cause, because he was always willing to step up and put others first. That’s just who he was.
Gavin fought hard and bravely, but sadly lost his fight. It was inevitable there would be a collection for Gavin, and for his lovely family: Amy, Sophie, Kieran and Ryan; there was just so much love for him. The outpouring of grief on Facebook makes it clear how much Gavin was loved and respected and how much he will be missed. This collection is an extension of those messages - a practical way for those who feel the need to do something to say thanks, or just to show their appreciation for the great man they knew.
Thank you x
