Marginalised young people take part in sports, music/media activities to support their engagement with education and employment

by Ignite Youth in Harrow, Greater London, United Kingdom

Who we are:

Ignite Youth (formerly Ignite Trust) has been embedded in Harrow for over 20 years, providing support and help to the borough's young people. Ignite focuses much of its work towards helping young people who are vulnerable, at-risk or from marginalised communities.

We work with young people aged 11-25 to help them re-engage with education, find employment or move away from anti-social behaviour, gang involvement and exploitative relationships.

Our vision:

Our vision is a community with young people to ignite change!

Our team:

We are a small team made up of eight youth/support workers, and four admin staff, most of whom live in the borough.

What we are fundraising for:

The project we are fundraising for is our sports and music/media initiatives - which comprises free sports, usually football, boxing and basketball, multi-sports and music sessions within the borough.  These activities take place in parts of the borough previously identified as having higher levels of poverty and youth crime.

We recognise that young people from these areas are often affected by social and economic inequality that prevents them from becoming involved and/or taking part in sporting and creative activities. Our project aims to overcome these barriers, whilst providing safe spaces for young people to come together.

‘…They’ve changed people’s aspects on life…moved kids away from a bad time…from doing bad things into focusing on life … doing something proper like going to college.’
