Project aim

A Rock Musical telling the tale of the legendary Glasgow Apollo. It is a story about the bands, the venue and most of all the fans.

About the project

After the success of two 'I Was There' shows in 2009 and 2010, and a demand to see it again from many Apollo Facebook fans I decided to go for it again starting with this Crowdfunding Campaign.

I Was There has been rewritten with new songs, new stories, and a new stage production. It is Bigger and Better and this is your chance to bring this show back live and either relive those magical days for one night or if you are too young to have been there be introduced to a piece of Glasgow Musical History through an explosive, funny and emotional Rock Musical.

It chronicles the passion that people had and still have for the Apollo theatre and describes the heartbreak of what it’s like to lose a big piece of your youth and your culture when it closed its doors in 1985.

It is 30 years since the Apollo closed its doors. Since then the legend of the 'Greatest Rock Venue in the World' is still venerated by the bands who played at it and more importantly a generation of rockers who grew up with it.

Unlike the flood of modern day musicals the show tells the story of not only one artist or band - it tells the story of the best rock bands ever to take to the stage, it features the greatest rock songs ever played and the central character is not a singer, a guitarist or a band. It is the story of thousands of young people who had a passion for great music and how the Apollo was part of their lives.

The Apollo is unique in the memory of Scottish music, dance hall and cinema fans over the age of 30 and for many, the venue which was situated at the top of the City's Renfield Street from 1927 to 1985, is closely associated with Glasgow's history.

Such was The Apollo's reputation that one relieved act is reputed to have printed

T-shirts saying: "....I played the Apollo and survived....".

All your memories in one fantastic show.

I Was There transports you back in time and brings you a fast paced show with a cast of 200 bringing a flavour of what it was like for those who are too young to have been there and for those who were it will bring back memories you thought you had forgot.

The show is produced by Loud n Proud an award winning Scottish music charity (Charity Number SC032337) and it's aim is to give young aspiring musicians and technicians the training and help to become professional in the muisc industry. I Was There will provide workshops, rehearsals, lectures and classes over the prior months to the show providing valuable new skills or improving on what they have already to make the young participants more employable.

For more than 14 years Loud n Proud have developed to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business. With many students performing at festivals and winning National Music Competitions they continue to develop young musicians at the top level. Loud ‘n’ Proud is Scotland’s premier learning place for the music of today—and tomorrow.
