Get The House of Edgar to the Edinburgh Fringe

Raising money to take our first show to Edinburgh Fringe. An original gothic horror musical based on the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe.

We did it!

On 20th Apr 2016 we successfully raised £2,985 of £2,000 target with 70 supporters in 21 days

New stretch target

We are delighted to have reached our initial target of £2000. This secures our production and ensures that we can go ahead to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August. However, with your support we would like to push on to our stretch target of £3000.

How would we use the extra money?

The extra £1000 we would like to raise would enable us to improve the quality of our production by hiring radio microphones for our cast to use in Edinburgh. In order to perform ‘The House of Edgar’ to its full potential and really capitalise on the eerie gothic soundtrack we have written we need to ensure the best possible sound balance for our performances. Radio microphones allow us to amplify the voices of our cast and balance them with the band’s output to create a truly immersive show.

The Argosy Arts Company is a new group formed of current and former students from the University of Exeter. This August we are taking our first ever show, ‘The House of Edgar’, to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The show is an original gothic horror musical, written by Argosy’s Thomas F. Arnold and Beth Cowley, based on the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe. We aim to raise £2,000 which will contribute to the costs of performing the show at the Edinburgh Festival.

About the Show

Edgar Allan Poe is dead. His reputation ruined and his legacy crumbling. His work is all that remains. As Rufus Griswold prepares to take control of Poe’s estate, echoes of the past begin to emerge. Inside these walls, are the stories simply marks upon a page, or something else entirely?

This show uses folk-styled songs to retell some of Poe's most famous stories, weaving them into a ghostly new tale. Unpredictable, unusual and unique: ‘The House of Edgar’ is an exciting and unlikely new blend of gothic horror and musical theatre.

Our Plans for the Fringe

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival, with thousands of acts performing at hundreds of venues across the city. We are excited to take advantage of such a fantastic opportunity to showcase new work and build the reputation of Argosy.

We have already secured our venue and registered the show with the Fringe Society. We will be performing at theSPACE on the Mile (Venue 39) from the 5 - 27 August at 10:10pm - an ideal slot for a horror musical! Our venue has capacity for 60 people.

Why We Need Your Help

The following table summarises our key forms of income and expenditure, highlighting the contribution that crowdfunding will make to our project. For every £1 of crowdfunding pledged we aim to generate at least £2 through ticket sales or other income streams, ensuring your contributions are matched by our own hard work.

Main Forms of Income & Expenditure

*Projected ticket sales are a rough estimate based on 40% fill (of 60 seat capacity) at an average price of £9 per ticket, deducting VAT and box office commission.

In addition to this crowdfunding campaign we have a great number of other fundraising opportunities and events planned including bake sales sponsored by a local cafe (Boston Tea Party), a show launch night and various other events. We will also be applying for a number of different grants to help cover some more of our set and venue hire costs. Finally, our cast and crew will be covering their own accomodation costs whilst in Edinburgh, meaning every penny we receieve will be targeted directly towards the show.

Thank You for Your Support!
