What is Urban Art Shed?
Based in Belfast, Urbanartshed was created by Maggie Mcatamney when she realised that she wanted to merge her love of teaching, designing and Contemporary Arts and with modern Laser Cutting techniques.
Maggie has over 22 years experience of working in Art and Design, 14 of which were in teaching a diverse range of groups from Secondary School Key Stage 3-5, Special Needs, Emotional Behavioural Difficulties, Referral Units, Adult Education and Craft Workshops to the wider community such as Professional Taster Sessions and Mental Health Groups.
"Enabling my students of all levels and abilities to tap into their creative curiosity is extremely rewarding for me, the benefits of exploring their ideas is immeasurable and I feel as though I am helping people to find their passion, gain new skills and experience a therapeutic respite from every day life"
With a background in Fashion and Textiles, Maggie lived in London for 12 years and 2 years in New Zealand, on return to N.Ireland Maggie immersed myself in making Art, "I began testing out my ideas in salvaged wood and painting techniques in the urban setting of her dad's back garden shed, playing around with tools, mixed media and Image Transfer Photography, I printed onto old pieces of wood rescued from local skips, I bought a chop saw and began to create quirky pieces that people seemed to love, hence the birth of Urbanartshed.
I was introduced to Digital Laser Cutting and Engraving in a local Digital Maker Hub in Belfast and was blown away by the possibilities and potential of merging my skills of traditional art with Digital Technology, and I knew that my students would love to learn this too!
The Problem We Face -
As a community of Artist's, teachers, designers and makers, people struggle across N.Ireland to access this type of Laser Cutting Technology because it is extremely expensive and specialised, there are very few 'Digital Maker Hubs' in N.Ireland and a Laser Cutting/Engraving machine can start at around £8000 - £25,000. I have identified a high demand for this type of technology as we are seeing an increase UK wide in using technology as a tool in the Arts, we also desperately need access to specialised and professional training in this area.
How I help the wider community
As a Fully qualified teacher of 13 years I have worked with young people and adults with special needs, mental health issues and Social and Emotional Behavioural Difficulties.
How students benefit from using creative technology as a tool.
Personal Development, Education and Professional Training is high on my agenda, allowing students to explore their ideas and express their Artistic ideas. They can develop Key Stage 3-5 skills and move on into further education with confidence. Regarding the wider community I have observed benefits in people with various mental health issues, learning difficulties and personal development in adult education.
We would also like to offer artists, designers and teachers professional development through workshops and easy access to the equipment.
How Your Money Helps
You donations will enable us to purchase a state of the art Laser Cutting/Engraving machine by Epilog. We would also purchase the necessary software, extraction and cooling system that allows the machinery to function efficiently and safely.
