We know that loneliness and isolation has a detrimental effect on the lives of older people. We know that volunteers are the life blood of many organisations that help support local communities in and around Swindon and are in need of more volunteers to help them deliver much needed services. Our project will make a lasting difference to the community and to that of older people in Swindon
Our Helping Hands project will help address these issues . We will work with local older people and those coming up to retirement to encourage and support them into giving their time to their local community and at the same time remain heathy and active. It could be through sharing skills gained in employment , befriending or mentoring a young person, helping a disabled person enjoy activities ,or helping the environment and heritage
We will undertake regular outreach sessions to promote the benefits of volunteering as a means of keeping healthy and active in later years and encourage people to engage with the project and become involved in local causes These events will take place in local community centres, libraries and at local events . We will offer people a chance to have an appointment to discuss the range of volunteering options that suit their time availability, skills and interests, some helping them find the perfect volunteering role .
We will work with local organisations to help them develop their volunteering opportunities and offer training sessions to help them better manage their older volunteers
