After years and years of hard work we finally did it! We realised our dreams of opening a cool and quirky bar. It would have been our first birthday in a couple of weeks...never could I have imagined a year ago we would be in this situation and not being able to celebrate.
Our first 9 months of trading was tough, it was hard work with long days and weeks. Time spent away from my family and 2 young children. But finally, all of the hard work was paying off. We had created a cool place for people to come and enjoy afternoon teas, cocktails, wines and a fabulous atmosphere!
We’ve met some amazing people since we’ve been open! Our guests are fantastic and make us who we are.
Then on the 20th March everything changed....we had to close our doors leaving uncertainty for us and more importantly our staff. We’re not a hugh multi national company - we’re a small, independent family run business.
COVID 19 has hit everyone in different ways. It’s heartbreaking to think that we may not be able to survive this storm. We want to reopen and continue to serve our guests. We’re staying positive and we can’t wait to see you all again soon!
We’ve never done anything like this before..asked for help. We’ve got a real chance of making it through this. When this uncertainty passes we want to make sure that we can reopen. We think it’s really important that the independent bars in Bristol weather this storm. It’s one of the reasons that makes Bristol such a great place to be!
We have taken a massive hit and unfortunately like many in our position will not be able to access funding and insurance and loans are looking less and less likely. We will use the funds to pay our overheads, taxes and supplier debts as well as ensuring all our furloughed staff have a wage.
We will be using these funds to ensure that The Last Word is still here after these difficult times pass.
If you’ve ever been to The Last Word (or we’re planning to!) and have had a great time - please help support us. It’s a financially challenging time for all of us so if you can spare anything we can hopefully get through this awful time and see you on the other side.
Take care and stay safe, Tomas
