Help Un-Age grow inter-generational food start ups

by Christian Ahlert in London, Greater London, England

With your help we can connect more under 25's with over 55's, and help them launch 10 new inter-generational food start-ups.

We did it
On 10th May 2018 we successfully raised £10,228 with 33 supporters in 28 days

New stretch target

If we get the extra £10000 we can buy an UnAge food catering van which our start up teams can use to launch.

Who we are

Un-Age is a social enterprise that helps under 25 year olds and over 55 year olds launch new businesses together in East London. We started Un-Age because we believe that diversity across age and culture creates more interesting and, ultimately, more successful businesses.

Our first start-up (captured on film above) is Brazlbo, a food pop-up created with the support of Un-Age by Jason, a 19 year-old Brazilian, and 57 year-old Evelyn from the Ibo tribe in Nigeria.

What we are trying to do

We want to launch our first inter-generational food start up support programme in June  2018 in Hackney.

The programme will be wide-open to East London residents under 25, and over 55. We’ve designed it to up-skill the teams in business; shaping their ideas, their marketability, brand development, accounting and food industry know-how. This can be anything from sorting their insurance to devising a new menu, and beyond.

We’re lucky to benefit from the support of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Hackney Council are also on board to help secure free launch opportunities in food markets and other borough-wide locations.

What will we do with the money

Our funding target of £10k will allow us to directly support 10 teams to launch their new businesses, and 100 individuals through our food start up workshop series throughout this year.

The funding will directly support a startup kit consisting of public liability insurance (necessary for new food businesses), vouchers for equipment, help with design and branding, as well as mentoring and support to trade at London markets and other food outlets. Far too often the difference between being able to start a new business or not, is about having the initial funds to get it off the ground.

Brick Lane Cookbook – Give a Little, Get a Lot (of Inspiration!)

If you pledge £9, we’d love to send you our Brick Lane Cookbook in the post. It’ll school you up on the Bangladeshi cuisine culture of East London, including where to shop for the ingredients. Unlike most cookbooks that explore the kitchens of different cultures by evoking their homelands, this cookbook and shopping guide was written for the culinary traveller who’s interested in what adventures they can experience on their own doorstep. We spent a year cheffing up with a group of Bangladeshi women who were in many ways the founding inspiration for UnAge!

Join an Un-Age Party

Watch the video and you can see that we had a lovely launch party for BrazIbo our first food start up - created by Evelyn from the Nigerian Ibo tribe and Jason from Brazil. The food is a fantastic blend of tropical Brazilian flavours and African cuisine.  You can either book a place for yourself, or choose an option for two. We will pick a similarly cool venue in East London and throw a foodie party for you where you will discover new flavours and see one of our food  start ups in action.   You can book your own party or join the party on 1st of June in a lovely artists warehouse in Shoreditch.
