My background is motor trade, and i have over 40 years experience of working with vehicles,so in april 2019 me and my partner will be travelling to kisumu, kenya to set up this project, where my skills/knowledge will be used to train these local young orphans how to repair cars/motorcycles etc. In order to set up the training workshop, the orphange wishes to build a workshop in the grounds of the orphanage so that training can take place to give the orphans a skill, and a career. The gideons orphanage was set up orignally by 1 man, opening up his home to local orphans, today it houses over 250 orphans, and in 2007 the charity awaken love for africa, came on board to share in helping the orphanage.
The money raised from donations will be spent on all the items required to set up a fully functioning workshop to work on cars /m/cycle aswell as using sheet metal work, and carpentry workshop.
A purpose built workshop needs to be built first, and then once built, will need fitting out with tooling/equipment ,such as vices/benches,compressor, trolley jacks for raising vehicles, hand tools, lighting, tyre changing equipment, welding kit, carpentry equipment, etc.
This is an ambitious project, and will take time and funding to make happen, but when finished, will be a huge step forward for these young people, giving them a skill for life, and a future career.
I personally love this type of voluntary work, and this project is something which is perfect for my skill set to pass on my knowledge and training.
These young people will gain so much independence from this, and it will be very empowering for them, giving them pride in their new skill set.
