Sarah running the London Marathon to support Dove in sending a Young Person to Camp America.

by Dove Adolescent Services in London, England, United Kingdom

Sarah running the London Marathon to support Dove in sending a Young Person to Camp America. Dove Adolescent Services have just celebrated our 25th anniversary. We began with Barbara and Dianne in 1993 with one home in Barnsley which over the years has been built up to a total of ten homes that strive to provide flexible, individual care packages and achieve positive outcomes for all young people. Our network of small multi-occupancy homes and single occupancy Specialist Resource Units give us the flexibility to support vulnerable children of very different backgrounds and needs. Our people, experience and approach to care are what make us stand out from other providers. In the last 25 years there have been many young people that have come through the doors of Dove, some of these young people have left and become mature adults. It is a matter of great pride to see the young people grow up, seek aspiration and follow their dreams. Last year Dove managed to raise enough money to send a one young person to Summit Camp, Pennsylvania, America. This summer we aim to send two of our young people and a member of staff over to Summit Camp for a 3-week period to again experience this once in a lifetime adventure. On their return we asked for a one-line response from the young person and staff member on their return and we think it speaks volumes! The trip was a huge success and both have said it is something they will never forget. Young Person – “I didn’t want to come home, loved it” Staff Member – “Life changing and an amazing opportunity” The Camp itself is a therapeutically designed summer sleepaway program organized to meet the social and emotional needs of young people. The programs run at the camp often serve children that have been diagnosed with developmental, social and emotional difficulties such as Asperger syndrome, ADHD and Autism. The Camps mission is providing a safe, happy and enriching experience while learning new skills and giving the young person the tools to grow. So, on the 28th April 2019 Sarah Burton has taken on the brave challenge of running the London marathon. Sarah who is one of Dove’s very own senior RCCW’s has been with Dove for over 10years and throughout those years has given her support to many young people and has experienced first-hand how the work done by the team’s at Dove benefit the young people we care for. So it is no surprise Sarah came to Barbara and Dianne with the idea of fundraising for Camp America by running the London marathon and of course they were thrilled! Below in her own words is Sarah’s journey into running: I started running in 2011 and completed my first London Marathon in a time of 3 hours 58 minutes in 2014. Unfortunately, after doing the marathon I fell out of love with running and stopped for a couple of years. While on a camping trip in the Lake District in 2017 I bumped into one of my old running friends who encouraged me to start running again so sure enough in September that year I started running again. My aim was to complete the London marathon again and take in the atmosphere instead of concentrating on my watch to monitor my pace. After completing my registration form for the ballot for a place I heard that Dove Adolescent Services were wanting fundraising ideas to raise money to send some of the young people we care for to camp America. This was the perfect motivation I could help some of the young people to have an experience of a life time and learn new life skills while going back and enjoying the London marathon myself. I was disappointed when I received the rejection email to say that I had been unsuccessful in the ballot, but all was not lost there was still the opportunity to get the club place at my running club. I was so happy when it was my name that was drawn out when the raffle was drawn after the club handicap race in December 2018. Now to the hard part the long training runs to ensure that I can complete the 26.2 miles around London on 28th April 2019, not only will your sponsorship help towards sending young people to camp America it will motivate me to get through the training and push me the last miles in the race. Thank you in advance for your support. Lets all pull together in supporting Sarah in this challenge and raising as much as we can to send not one but two young people to Camp America this year! Without your help we won’t be able to make this happen so thank you in advance for your generosity and support. This will make a massive difference to a young person’s life who is really deserving of this opportunity.
