Leyland Lawn Tennis Club

During the lockdowns our old clubhouse has fallen into a sad state of disrepair. In order to restart playing again we need to have a building to operate from.

In 4 years time Leyland Lawn Tennis Club will be 100 years old. Our men’s singles trophy is dated 1925. Now most people including all those born and bred in Leyland are thinking where the heck is the tennis club in Leyland. It is worth making the effort to find this hidden gem.

The sad thing is we are not in a good shape to celebrate our centenary.

The club originally known as Mayfield Tennis Club had courts somewhere opposite to where Wellington Park was. That area is now a housing estate, The Mayfield club moved to its present site and was renamed Leyland Lawn Tennis Club,

In the 1970s a holiday home was moved from Anglesey to be used as a clubhouse. It had reached the end of its life as a holiday home by then. For the last 50 years this holiday home clubhouse has been loved by all the members, The list of repairs these days grows faster than it is possible to keep up with and the cost of repairs makes it unviable to continue maintaining it. We are therefore looking for funding to replace the existing clubhouse with a new building. The clubhouse has now been condemned ready for demolition. We are having to use a temporary static caravan.

There Is a perception that tennis is an elite sport played by wealthy people, This is absolutely not the case in Leyland. We are an extremely friendly bunch and everyone arriving is made to feel very welcome. The money our members pay each year is spent on maintaining the 4 courts, floodlights and fencing.

The £1000 we are looking to raise will pay for design drawings to meet building regulations ready for submitting for planning permission. Further funding will then be required to complete construction.
