The Red and Green Club is unique!
This former Socialist Club in Milnsbridge is now being run as a cooperative. It’s a unique venue for Huddersfield, the Colne Valley and the surrounding area, offering live music, theatre, cinema, poetry readings, story-telling, community learning, meeting spaces, private hire and a bar. In the last year or two, the group of volunteers who run everything has dwindled, capacity to fund-raise has shrunk, and income is down to dangerous levels... The Club needs support to survive, and if possible for refurbishment.
Milnsbridge Socialist Club is one of Britain’s oldest surviving socialist club, established in 1892. Great radical figures like Christabel Pankhurst, Philip Snowden and Victor Grayson spoke in the club. Harold Wilson, born nearby, was a regular visitor. When the original club ceased trading, the Milnsbridge Co-operative Society was formed by local community activists. The Red and Green Club re-launched in 2013 and is totally run by volunteers - including socialists, greens, labour & trades unionists and others with no particular political ideology - all coming together to provide an inclusive venue for the Huddersfield area, and a facility for the community.
Without the help of local volunteers and supporters - including YOU! - the Club will close. The Red and Green Club needs to raise £1000 just to pay the bills and make it through the next month or two... Then it needs refurbishment... 2019 will be a crucial year for us to decide the Club’s future together - so please get involved and join the conversation!
