The UK throws away nearly three billion nappies a year, 90% of which will go through household waste streams which means being destined for either incineration or landfill where they can take more than 300 years to break down.
Many parents are very aware of the impact of disposable nappies but getting started using cloth nappies can be confusing. There are different types and styles and the number of fabric variants mean there a literally hundreds to choose from. To buy a reusable birth-to-potty kit of one brand can cost from £150 - £300, which can mean expensive mistakes if you buy a type that you later find doesn't work for your child.
The nappy library kits will enable parents to try a variety of styles before making the decision to go "cloth bum".
We've had some amazing donations of nappies which will form the basis of kits to hire and for using in demonstrations. However many of these are of similar types - prefolds and fitted - and many are older versions no longer on sale. We want to ensure that those hiring kits can try full range and that if a parent finds a nappy that really works for them, they will be able to go on to buy their own stash.
We are fundraising to buy a selection of birth-to-potty all in ones, all in twos and smaller sizes for newborns.
A new nappy typically costs £10-20 but will last many years. We have a waiting list of parents and carers keen to get started so expect our kits to be out on hire every month. Monthly hire for a full kit is £10-15, income from which is reinvested in the library to buy more kits.
We've support from retailers and are Members of the UK Nappy Network as well as being fully insured.
Thanks so much for your donation
