1635457575_christmas_lights_at_st_marys_stalbridge.jpgChristmas in Stalbridge is a very special time - as you approach the town from Henstridge you first see the bright lights around the tower of St Mary’s Church, before heading down Church Hill and the hundreds of twinkling stars that decorate the railings. From the top of Church Hill the colourful Christmas trees begin. Perched high on the outside of all the houses and shops they continue down to the old Market Cross at the beginning of The High Street.

The Festival of Light continues along the High Street in a riot of colour, with shop and house windows festooned with clever and beautiful Christmas displays. 1633357457_3e3455cb-1da9-42cf-bdca-5ea6e2be1014.jpeg

As you approach the Ring, the splendid lime tree first lit up in 2003, sparkles in the night sky with 4000 twinkling lights. It is a sight to behold. 1633357489_c1eb0d86-a409-45d2-b2b9-567b40ca572d.jpeg

The annual ‘lighting up ceremony’ with the dozens of children’s handmade lanterns on display and festive Carol service is a highly anticipated date in our calendar in the start of the run up to Christmas. 1633353274_c19536fd-d042-47d2-b003-7cdb9c53b93a.jpeg

Stalbright is the Community Fund Raising Group for Stalbridge, which strives to ‘build community spirit amongst the residents of Stalbridge by organising, promoting and supporting special events within the town’.  Included under the ‘umbrella’ organisation of Stalbright, come the ‘crafty’ ladies of the Stalbridge Creative whose projects in recent years have included stunning displays of knitted poppies for Remembrance, realistic knitted hanging baskets along the High Street and imaginative CD stars at Christmas; this year they are working with Angels.

The Stalbright volunteers, along with the ladies from the Creative and the local tradesmen who give their services at cost, all work hard in making Stalbridge look as festive as possible at Christmas.  On average Stalbright will spend over £1000 on the lighting up of the town including the provision of the trees along the High Street, replacement of lights and the maintenance and repair of the lighting on the Ring.

Although the smallest town in Dorset we are very proud of our Christmas lights and the community spirit generated within the town during the festival period.

Hard work by many volunteer groups, going right back to those early days in December 2003 has enabled Stalbridge to retain our deserved reputation as an impressive and welcoming place to visit at Christmas.1633358292_9fbd296b-6342-46fb-9bc8-1f86d98d8242.jpeg

Owing to the recent pandemic it has not be possible to raise funds for the Christmas lights as in previous years.

Now is the time and your opportunity to contribute to our fundraising and help light up Stalbridge in 2021 continuing the traditions of the previous 18 years.
