Since 2005, “Honey”, our trip boat has carried hundreds of passengers each year, operated by volunteers she has raised some £5k per year for the benefit of the Lake visitors & users with the proceeds being “ploughed back” in to a number of improvements.
Sadly Honey must now be retired owing to both dry & wet rot having developed over the years, despite all our volunteer’s efforts, and although we have ideas of future use for her it won’t be as a trip boat.
Honey has a history which mustn’t be forgotten in that she was the Captains launch on HMS Obdurate from 1942 to 1966 seeing action in the North Atlantic Convoys and then in the Artic Convoys and so its our intention to apply for Lottery Funding towards retiring her to a cradle berth alongside Rudyard Lake where she has brought enjoyment to so many people from school parties, birthday parties, leaning difficulty children & adults, wedding groups & private groups to say nothing of the tourists visiting Rudyard Lake during the Summer months.
So that’s one “dream” which we hope will be attainable with funding support.
However, no Honey, means no trip boat on Rudyard Lake, unless we can find the public support, private sponsorship and funding towards her replacement and this is then our priority in the interests of keeping not only Honey’s story alive but the 150 year old tradition of seeing trip boats on Rudyard Lake.
Whilst wooden boats are beautiful they require constant attention and maintenance and therefore we would like to set our sights on a fibreglass low maintenance boat, in an ideal world, one powered by electric propulsion which is energy efficient, pollution free & very quiet along with a scissor lift incorporated in to its deck to allow the easy access of wheelchair users.
Please understand that we have scoured the second hand market without success over the past month or so & whilst there are hundreds of boats for sale we couldn’t find one suitable for our requirements to date. We will of course keep looking!
A new boat with the required specification, including roof & side curtains will cost just over £82k, and the Rudyard Lake Trust & League of Friends can currently find about £15/20k towards this important project and we sincerely hope you may see your way to assist by making a donation which will show your kind support and appreciation of what we are trying to achieve.
We thank you for your support in the past and hopefully for that in the future,
The Rudyard Lake Trust & The Rudyard Lake League of Friends
