About ‘PARADOX’ Theatre

PARADOX Theatre Co. are an independent theatre company founded by students Nicole Moran and Amy Blakelock . PARADOX Theatre is an extremely new company, having been founded in 2017. It was created out of a common wish to push the boundaries of new writing and direction, and to give new theatre the recognition it deserves. Coming from different backgrounds, each founder realised that although their approach might be different, a common goal was shared; and this united a mentality for the working process. By utilizing both of their skill sets, Amy and Nicole hope to create work that is realistic and cutting edge.

Previous Work

Nicole’s previous work most recently includes direction of EUTCO’s ‘Monster’ and Theatre With Teeth’s ‘Undone’. Her first production was Exeter University’s production of ‘Iphigenia in Splott’. Amy has been writing since college, and her love for writing was first encouraged when she was longlisted on the National Theatre’s New Views Course for her play ‘Dad’. Since then, she has gone on to write for Theatre With Teeth, and to continually produce much of her own work within the university.

Our debut Production, ‘Firewater’:

We are so passionate about the work we are creating and the effect it could have on potential audiences. Because we are independent our funding depends on donations from the public, and their faith in our vision. We would love it if you could spare any money to help us make it to the Fringe!
Amy’s writing hopes to convey the mindset of a generation, expressing many urgent issues for young people today. Inspired by a series of verbatim interviews Amy conducted with a friend, ‘Firewater’ aims not to be just an isolated piece of theatre, but also a comment the realities that many adolescents are facing. Merging themes of intoxication, love, consent, and humour on our stage, we hope to create a performance that will entertain audiences whilst making them rethink the way in which they view the world. You can catch a preview in Exeter on June 13th.

The Edinburgh Fringe Tour:

We have booked at 6 day run in Edinburgh, and will be performing from the 14th to the 19th of August at theSpace on North Bridge, The Argyll Theatre, at 14.00. There are fifty seats to fill for each performance, and as we’re going to the Fringe independently, for a short run of six days, word of mouth and advertising is going to be key for us! Your money could help us ensure that we can get as many people as possible to see the show.
Nicole and Amy have produced a lot of work within the University, whether it be through societies or as part of Exeter University’s Drama Festival. As graduation is getting nearer, this could really be their chance to begin networking and getting their work seen by industry professionals. For the actors in the cast, the Fringe also provides a valuable platform in this sense, and would be an incredible way for everyone involved to finish their university careers.

Further than that, we really do believe that this play contains an important message for it’s audiences; we are so passionate about the work we are creating and believe it deserves a platform, a chance for a new voice to be heard.

Where your money will go / how are you helping?

As emphasised before, because we are an independent company financing the Fringe has been extremely ambitious for us. So you can see exactly where your money is going, we’ve made a budget breakdown:

*Projected ticket sales are a rough estimate based on 40% fill (of 50 seat capacity) at an average price of £8 per ticket, deducting VAT and box office commission.

In addition to this crowdfunding campaign we have a great number of other fundraising opportunities and events planned including bake sales, a show launch night and various other events. We will also be applying for a number of different grants to help cover some more of our set and venue hire costs. Finally, our cast and crew will be covering their own accomodation costs whilst in Edinburgh, meaning every penny we receieve will be targeted directly towards the show.
