Herts & Essex Community Farm

To be a not-for-profit community farm growing fresh fruits & vegetables using organic principles, as well as providing a shared space for the local community to cultivate skills.

We did it!

On 13th Feb 2014 we successfully raised £5,150 of £5,000 target with 69 supporters in 42 days

Herts & Essex Community Farm is a non for profit project which is looking to start a community farm on the Hertfordshire and Essex border which is open to anyone who would like to get involved.

We have found 3 acres of organic agricultural land where we want to grow fruit and vegetables. We also plan on keeping free-range goats, chickens and ducks which will provide us with eggs and milk.

The land we are looking to use is located in High Wych, Sawbridgeworth which is close to Harlow Town and Bishop Stortford.

The land is very fertile as it has not been farmed for a few years, the land is currently quite overgrown in parts this will be cut back and the planting areas will be rotavated by the current lease holder ready for us in May 2014 if we take over the lease.

If we reach our crowdfunder target it will enable us to secure the lease on the land for the first year as well as helping to pay for other start up costs of the project including; farm equipment, plants, farm animals and much more!

The farmland consists of vegetable and fruit planting beds, orchard, 2 large polytunnels, composting area and a large pond. There are taps for water throughout the land and power points, we also aim to produce our own power for the farm through solar panels.

The project will eventually be self-sustaining through the sale of fruits, vegetables, eggs and other products produced sustainably on the farm, we will sell our produce at an affordable price directly to the local area through a farm shop and also markets.

What we aim to do:

  • To develop and maintain the orchard, vegetables and fruits grown using organic techniques.
  • Develop wildlife habitats to support organic gardening and conservation.
  • Conserve local fruit tree varieties planted in the orchard.
  • Grow heritage and other fruit & vegetable varieties and save seed for future use.
  • Show participants how to grow food in a sustainable way.
  • Give access to fresh food to the local community.
  • Provide an opportunity for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems to learn practical and personal skills.
  • Provide an opportunity to local residents to learn gardening/farming techniques for fruit and vegetable growing and also animal care.
  • Encourage children to engage in gardening and conservation through school activities and family focused events.
  • To be community led and non-for-profit.

We need to raise £5000 to start the project this will be used for:

£4000 - First year's lease on the land ~ This price of the lease will be lower after the first year.£1000 - To help towards the start up costs of the farm

You will be able to see exactly where your pledge has gone as we will keep you upto date with progress on the farm and anyone is welcome to visit the farm to see whats happening. Everyone who pledges will have a say on how the project is run, will have a vote in all major decision making and be invited to meetings.

Pledge rewards will be honoured as soon as possible, we hope that we will be producing fruits, vegetables and eggs by September.

Produce boxes will include fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, also included are eggs and other farm produce. Box's can be collected from the farm or delivered to local area - Delivery can be arranged for rest of the UK.

*Note: If we're supported enough to be overfunded, don't worry, we'll not be off to the pub with it!  Further funding will go towards helping to further pay for farm equipment, plants and livestock. We also hope to eventually raise the funds to build a sheltered communal area which will include a kitchen and educational space.
