Dave, our Founder, has experienced first-hand what it is like to live on the fringe of society as a young person - trying to hold down a job and study Teaching at university without having somewhere to call home. He knows how easy it is for young people to be drawn away from education, training and employment and into a life of anti-social behaviour, drink, drugs and crime.
Dave's passion is to see young people in the Chester le Street and surrounding areas not only drawn back into training and education, but to be empowered to be who they can be, and to do whatever they believe they can do. Rather than relinquish their ambitions to a life of mediocrity, due to one or two poor decisions or adverse life experiences, young people can be encouraged and equipped to believe in themselves again, and get back onto the path they were destined for, despite their circumstances. Essentially, restoring hope.
Heartwood Skills seeks to provide mentoring, training, tutoring and pathways to employment for young people and adults who have a need - however big or small. This includes industry-recognised qualifications to help young people get into employment. We can offer bespoke programmes aimed at promoting every individual's sense of self-worth and self-belief. We are currently working within the community to provide an adult reading and writing course, and provide GCSE-level tutoring.
Mental and emotional well-being is at the heart of our vision. We aim to promote awareness of mental health needs through our mentoring and befriending programmes, in addition to working closely with the local community and facilitating external workshops and training events.
How can you help?
Crowdfunding is important to us as it gives us the ability to develop our programmes and expand our resources. The money raised will allow us to create and fund our training, tutoring and mentoring schemes and provide essential training in our community cafe
