Hastings Pride Heroes

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighbourhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement outside the bar on Christopher Street, in neighbouring streets and in nearby Christopher Park.

The Stonewall Uprising served as a catalyst for the LGBT+ rights movement in the United States and around the world.

While we have gained many rights in law leading to greater equality things are still far from perfect.

National LGBT Survey: Research report (Summary Report)

• LGBT respondents are less satisfied with their life than the general UK population (rating satisfaction 6.5 on average out of 10 compared with 7.7). Trans respondents had particularly low scores (around 5.4 out of 10).

• More than two thirds of LGBT respondents said they avoid holding hands with a same-sex partner for fear of a negative reaction from others.

• At least two in five respondents had experienced an incident because they were LGBT, such as verbal harassment or physical violence, in the 12 months preceding the survey. However, more than nine in ten of the most serious incidents went unreported, often because respondents thought ‘it happens all the time’.

• 2% of respondents had undergone conversion or reparative therapy in an attempt to ‘cure’ them of being LGBT, and a further 5% had been offered it.

• 24% of respondents had accessed mental health services in the 12 months preceding the survey.

'Despite the progress we have made as a country, we should not be blind to the fact that LGBT people continue to face barriers to full participation in public life. We want to build a country that works for everyone, and that means tackling these burning injustices'

In addition to this LGB people attempt suicide at a rate of over 1 in 4 people while transgender people attempt to take their own lives at a rate of almost 1 in 2.

This is the difference Hastings Pride will make because the commonality with all these statistics comes down to intolerance, discrimination and Hate. Hastings Pride is not just a celebration of diversity, but it sends out a clear message of support and solidarity for LGBT+ and minority communities. This support comes from every facet and aspect of the  local area and helps to marginalise and silence hate. In being so visible, welcoming and inclusive Hastings Pride breaks down the barriers of ignorance and fear and in doing so reduces isolation, oppression and discrimination. It reduces hate crime and helps mental health.

The Festival provides a safe space where vulnerable communities can come together to forge new friendships and find support groups. Hastings Pride not only has sale stalls and food & drink vendors, the festival site also has various organisations and community groups who have information stands which attendees would not necessarily be aware of or not know how to get in contact with. It’s an opportunity for people to have access to information and support which they may not always be able to obtain or have knowledge of particularly around support groups, community organisations, general health and mental health.
