WHO ARE WE?
We are two friends, Alex and Haydn. Both born severely prematurely (Alex at 26 weeks & Haydn at 27 weeks) and both of us have been lucky in different ways..
Following a year in hospital recently, we asked the public to send in their 'Happy Smiles' to cheer Haydn up and we had a massive response!
In August, we decided to set up the Happy Smiles Facebook page (www.facebook.com/happysmilesblog) and have since reached over 80,000 people by sharing videos of friends with 'disabilities', discussing their own stories and showing off their abilities, rather than their perceived disabilities. We have also featured on local radio and in the newspaper.
WHAT DO WE DO?
Our aim is to educate the world about what people with ‘disabilities' CAN do, thereby improving the lives of our communities on a number of levels. We have already spent a week in one of the top 100 schools in the country, teaching its students about the power of a positive mindset with regards to ‘disability’, and the impact is evident in the feedback we have received. Such feedback included the honest reflections from students, with comments such as 'I used to think people with disabilities couldn't do anything but now I know different'. This is more important now than ever, in a time when disability is the third highest increasing form hate crime over recent years!
We want to take this impact further.
WHY DO WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT?
We need an accessible vehicle to allow us to spread our disability awareness message and introduce Inclusion Champions across every society! By joining our mission, you are contributing towards the empowerment of people with and without disabilities, and building a more inclusive world for all (YOU COULD EVEN GET YOUR NAME ON OUR VAN! :D)
Thank you for helping us to promote inclusion.. one smile at a time! :D
