Let us Play!

“Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity.” – Kay Redfield Jamison

Hambledon Parish Council is seeking crowd funding for a new play tower at the Village Hall play area. The Village Hall is central to our small village and acts as a vibrant community hub for all. Much of the current equipment located at the Village Hall has been at the site for the past thirty years and is not fit for purpose for smaller children aged approximately 2 to 7 years. This leaves a huge gap in provision, which has resulted in younger children and their parents/carers being less involved in the local community. Having an area suitable for the younger children will allow families of all ages to visit the Village Hall and enjoy the play area together; building the fabric of the community.

“The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct.” – Carl Jung

What is the need for the project in the community?

The past year has been very difficult for us all, not least our children -  some of whom can hardly remember going to the park and playing with friends. The Village Hall playground is central in the village of Hambledon and should be a place where parents/carers can bring children of all ages to play and socialise outdoors. New play equipment is vital to provide a safe space for children whilst parents and carers relax, safe in the knowledge that the equipment is fit for purpose, whilst themselves benefitting from socialising in the fresh air. Although targeted at younger children, the equipment will bring a much broader section of the community together with children of all ages, parents and guardians.

“Almost all creativity involves purposeful play.” – Abraham Maslow

Who We Are?

We are representatives of Hambledon Parish Council, and importantly we are members of our small village community of 998 individuals. Amongst our residents there are many parents, grandparents and even great grandparents (!), and the wider community includes families who attend the village Pre-school and the Primary School. The PC is very active in promoting the village community so as to ensure that village life builds strong positive memories for all who live here. It does not have a large budget for village spending, particularly in the current climate, but being an active parish council it is in a perfect position to pull our community together and garner support for this endeavour. It believes that this will benefit the children of the village, and the wider village community, for many years to come.

“Necessity may be the mother of invention, but play is certainly the father.” – Roger Von Oech

How We Got Here

A proportion of the play equipment at the village hall, including the play tower, was installed over thirty years ago. It has been well used and is now tired, worn, and very out of kilter with modern standards and expectations. Older children have since been catered for at a newer site in Stewarts Green, but lack of funds has meant that the provision for younger children is now woefully poor.

“Children learn as they play. More importantly, in play, children learn how to learn.” – O. Fred Donaldson

Fund Raising Efforts

The village is very much behind this effort, with individuals and businesses showing support even at the early stages of fundraising. Our goal is to raise funds through various events and activities in the village; encouraging as many different groups and individuals as possible to get involved. This really will be a fantastic, positive way for our community to come back together, united, following a very difficult past year living with Covid-19.

“Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.” -Joseph Chilton Pearce

The funds raised from this phase of the project will be spent on replacing the play tower, which the PC considers the item in most urgent need of updating. Going forward, fundraising will continue to allow the PC to replace and refurbish other play equipment in the village which is geared towards the older children, and provide better seating areas for parents and carers.
