I have coached gymnastics for 40 years and during that time worked and created the GYMTED activity programme. Many children have already benefited from their association with the Programme and moved onto be physically active in many other fields as a result.   I started the Kestrel Gymnastics Group and GYMTED is an arm of this Scottish Charity.    As it is becoming more and more difficult to recruit people into coaching my vision is that we can give people the opportunity to learn a skill that will bring them pleasure and enjoyment while working as an apprentice in the Gymted area.   My overall vision is to be able to offer to all children, regardless of ability, gender or creed, the opportunity to become adept at all the necessary skills available to them in a fun, safe environment.

We therefore require to have our own dedicated premises and I will be looking and discussing the possibility of this with a number of agencies that may be able to help.    At present we are in the Oriam Centre at Heriot-Watt University but only on a Monday.   It is very difficult to run the programme at any other time due to the logistics of setting up and taking down the equipment every time a class is held and it is not capable of being taken around other centres.

This is what we will be requiring the money for, firstly the training of the new coaches while an apprentice coach.

Secondly acquiring a dedicated gymnastics facility to house the Pre-school Programme.   This programme can expand to the Primary School age children quite easily and given the fact that after-school clubs also have trouble recruiting coaches, I can see that this will be how the other hours available will be taken up.

Gymnastics training means "all physical movement" and also teaches many life skills which help the childen to grow up confidently and with empathy and respect for others.

Once involved in Gymnastics the passion takes over like a drug and you want to continue working to the benefit of the children who come into gymnastics regardless of ability and watch them grow in confidence as they reach their capabilities and more.   The team spirit is strong and they work to help each other improve.
