New stretch target

The stretch target will enable us to purchase higher spec lab equipment to monitor the quality of our beer to a better standard and ensure quality throughout the process.

The following is a tale of two breweries, explaining who we are, what we're wanting to do with the funds and why we're doing it with a crowd funder.

In It Together

Green Duck (Alex, Alan & Nathan) & Twisted Barrel (Ritchie, Chris, Jen & Annie) have known each other since 2015, we've always got along sharing a similar ethos and a love for beer in all shapes and sizes.

We've put together a crowdfunding package that we think gives back as much as it asks for. We're both about community involvement in our business, and this crowd funder is as much about us getting our canning line as it is about rewarding your faith in our breweries. We didn't want to go to the bank and borrow the money for this machine, we wanted to give something back to our customers as well.

Both of us have been hit hard by the COVID pandemic, seeing our industry change drastically in a super short amount of time. We're both draught heavy producers (over 85%), so most of our beer goes into cask and keg. This made it really hard to switch our packaging types in a short space of time. We've both relied on mobile canning in the past, which takes weeks of planning under normal circumstances, let alone during a global pandemic when most other breweries in the UK has a similar idea.

By teaming up we can ensure that the investment is maximised and down time for the machine is kept to a minimum, thus ensuring the best return on our and your investment.

In the not to distant future, we intend to open up the use of the canning line to other local breweries to rent for the day, to make sure the machine is well used and is helping other local breweries out.

Why A Canning Line?

Canning is a superior process as compared to in house bottling. It provides freshness of flavour, stability of product, ease of transport and storage and is a great canvas for incredible artwork from local talent. This is why we made the initial switch to mobile canning. However, mobile canning provides logistical issues for a small breweries such as ourselves. Whilst we’ve always worked with the most technically proficient and well respected service in the UK, Them That Can, we are dependent on factors such as minimum volumes for canning and availability of the service provider. Beers have to be canned on a particular date, rather than when they’re ready. This can mean beers that are ready to drink are sat in tank waiting for a canning date, rather than in your hands being enjoyed when they’re ready.

We've decided to go with a machine from Micro-Can. the leading UK manufacturer of small scale canning lines. Priding themselves on the ability to supply a full turnkey package with no compromise on quality. We chose Micro-Can as they are fellow independent British business.

Moving forwards, having our own canning line will do the following:

 - Enable us to bring a greater variety of beers to the small pack market, that better suits a diverse range of production

 - Safeguard us against disruption to the draught market

 - Bring down the price of our small pack beers, due to savings made from bringing packaging in house

  - Split our packaging across draught and small pack according to demand for a particular style

Twisted Barrel Ale

Twisted Barrel are a 6 barrel microbrewery located in the heart of Coventry’s creative quarter, FarGo Village. We commenced brewing in a garage in 2014 and have expanded production twice since then into our current space. We produce all natural, vegan beers across a wide range of styles, and have won numerous Rate Beer Best Beer of the West Midlands awards, in fact holding the title for the last six years for different brews.

We commenced canning using a mobile canning provider in December 2017, and have distributed those cans far and wide across the UK and internationally to Ireland, France, Italy, Spain and Japan.

We’re also hampered by the nature of the UK market, which demands constant innovation and new brews and focusses on a narrow range of beer styles that sell well. This does not suit a brewery such as ourselves known for producing a wide range of styles to a high quality. It also does not reward a supplier of consistent, sessionable core range beers meaning that best-selling beers such as our Session IPA (Sine Qua Non) or Oatmeal Stout (Gods Twisted Sister) rarely make it into small pack as the onus is on canning fussy beer styles that sell quickly. We’ve lost count of the number of times a customer in our Tap House asks ‘have you got that beer to take away?’. The answer is usually no, because it’s a Belgian Blonde or Dark Mild which we know we’d struggle to sell if we had to package over 1,000 cans of it to meet minimum volume requirements for mobile canning. So, the answer to all these issues is our own canning line. We’ve known this for a long time, but struggled to justify it due to our small size and lack of availability to finance the project. We’ve also had the reliable source of income from our own Tap House and sale of draught products to other bars and pubs, which pre-Covid accounted for 86% of our income. The loss of the draught beer market made it extremely difficult for us to pivot to production of small pack, as every other brewery in the UK was trying to do at the same time, hence meaning mobile canning availability was scarce.  In order to safeguard us against future business interruption (because, hey, insurance for that is useless anyway), we feel this is the best step forward for our business.

Green Duck Beer Co.

Green Duck are a a 10 barrel microbrewery based in Stourbridge, West Midlands. We formed in 2012 and produce most of our beer into cask, with the rest going to keg, bottle and cans. We're all about producing beers that are approachable and easy drinking for everyone. In the last 3 years we've doubled our capacity twice over to keep up with you thirsty lot and have invested heavily on improving our process and practises.

When COVID hit, we were unprepared to say the very least. We were fresh off the back of a series of break ins at our unit, and had to spend heavily on upgrading our security, depleting all our cash reserves and dipping into our overdraft for the first time in 8 years. When the pubs were closed down, we moved fast, offering a delivery service to the doors of our customers for free. We were blown away by the support we received, and it allowed us to brew during lockdown, albeit at 2.5% of normal capacity.

We started canning towards the end of lockdown using Them That Can, who provided a fantastic service. But sadly they also had to make money, and it made our cans quite pricy and meant we struggled to shift the volume required to make it a viable part of our business in the long term. We knew we needed our own inhouse canning line, but were put off by the cost involved and the need to go to the bank.

When the chance came up to team up with our pals at Twisted Barrel, everything seemed to fit into place.

We're excited at what the canning line can do for us, improving our range of beers that our customers can drink at home and being able to get creative with what we brew to suit the format.
