To raise funds to support the work of the Gower Initiative for Modern Money Studies

by Jessica Ormerod in London, England, United Kingdom

The GIMMS project is part of an international movement which challenges the mainstream thinking in economics of the last five decades. Our primary objective is to promote a better public understanding of economics and the policy space which exists for real social and environmental improvement here in the UK. This matters very much in terms of public policy, as current economic thinking has led to austerity and the shrinking of our public services. Poverty has increased, especially the number of children now living in households with less than a living wage. Care home and hospital beds have decreased in number, leaving the ill and the vulnerable with inadequate support. Yet the public believes there is not enough money to fund these services. This is to misunderstand finances at a national level. The Gower Initiative intends to tackle those misconceptions. We see our project as part of a growing social movement to improve participation in democracy. We shall be launching our project in London in early October with an event at which the economist Professor Bill Mitchell will be the keynote speaker. It will be followed by seminar sessions on Modern Monetary Theory and the Job Guarantee also by Professor Mitchell. In order to maintain the independence of the organisation we aim to be fully funded for our running costs from public subscription. The crowdfunder will prime our activities and cover our initial set up costs. After our project launch we will have a regular donations page on our website.
