As Scottish #1 60kg amateur boxing champion, a member of the Scottish Boxing Team , Hayfield Boxing Club and now rewarded the privilege of been selected to represent Scotland in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia in April 2018. I am extremely proud to be given this opportunity and to pull on the Scottish vest as I take on some tough opponents from as far afield as Africa, America’s, Asia, Carribean, Europe and including the home nation of Australia- in the Oceania regions.
This year Amongst many other accolades, I have been in tournaments in Hungary and Serbia, the against the Army and received a prestigious SAS commemorative medal for my win. As a 21 year old who has lived in Glasgow for the past 18 years, I look forward to representing the City too. With no team in that ring with me, I’m depending on support to be my extra tool in the bag.
Now at a place in my boxing career where juggling full time shift work with my sparring, strength and conditioning and boxing training may impact my ability to commit as many hours as possible to the sport in order to fulfil my full potential. I want to bring home gold and continue to perform in an International field with world class opponents. (Many of whom are full time athletes, due to sponsorship). Unfortunately I do not get funding.
I am seeking support from my community, boxing fans, family, friends, businesses and those enthused by the drive, determination, passion and commitment I have displayed over the last 7 years to get me to this point in my journey. I have overcome a bad car accident, 20kg of weight gain, gave up my University place at Stirling and College studies in sport and currently juggle a full time job, to chase the dream - a world class boxer. I have remained positive, motivated and hopefully inspirational to others throughout. Always an advocate of the saying ‘you can do anything you put your mind to’.
Training 6 days per week is not only tough but comes at a financial cost. Eating a specific diet, requiring a vehicle/insurance/petrol to get me to various locations to spar, train and perform, equipment such as gloves, boots, wraps, protective wear and training clothes.
As a 21 year old man, I am unable to pull on savings , so working to fund my real passion and gift as a high performing sportsman. My parents provide a roof over my head and as much support as they can but with other siblings and commitments, this isn’t possible for them to fully fund me full time. Living in Glasgow for the past 18 years, I went to primary in Hamilton, Secondary in Bearsden, train with Hayfield in the Gorbals and live in Stepps with my family.
I would like you to share my journey, success and help contribute to the platform to make me the next Gold Medalist and inspiring athlete to come out of Scotland. I would also hope to then gain some time to increase my involvement with local youngsters in the community. All raising not just my own profile but that of Team Scotland and the positive message of health, sport, discipline and fun that this sport brings to our communities.
So whether it be £2, £20,£200 crowdfunding is helping me pull on the collective support and energy of the ‘crowd’. 100 £2’s feels small individually and you might think not a great help but put it together and it’s a pair of new boxing gloves ???? I hope to raise enough to allow me to focus Jan,Feb and March full time boxing and then I travel to Australia end March until mid April. Let’s think about the next step when I bring back that Gold.????????
Please also follow my journey on twitter, Instagram and on the official #Team Scotland page.
All it leaves me to say is ‘come in Scotland and a massive THANK YOU for helping me give it my all to bring back that GOLD.
