 New stretch target

Training a teacher to be confident and informed in a range of mental health disorders costs £100.

With the help from this fund, we want to train 50 teachers, who will act as the mental health first aiders in their schools. Our initial target of £2,000 will support the initial 20, but if we get £5,000 we will train the full 50 and make a big difference to over 800 school children across the UK.

Results from the 2018  Government report on children and young people suggests around half of all lifetime mental health problems start by the mid-teens, and three-quarters by the mid-20s, although treatment typically does not start until a number of years later.

The most recent survey of the mental health of children and young people in England found that 12.5% of 5 to 19 year olds had at least one mental disorder when assessed (2017), and 5% met the criteria for 2 or more mental disorders.

There also appears to be a slight increase over time in the prevalence of mental disorder in 5 to 15 year olds, rising from 9.7% (1999) to 10.1% (2004) to 11.2% (2017).

To address this, the Shaw Mind team are delivering mental health training through a network of professional training partners, to teachers, children, young people and their parents. Each of the courses are tailored to the participants to help raise awareness of a range of mental health disorders and to build the resilience, knowledge and experience of those who attend.

Shaw Mind believes that everyone should have access to mental health support whenever they need it. These training sessions will help us equip the next generation with the tools they need to live happy, balanced and fulfilled lives.
