Dorking Girls Rugby Team.
By way of background, the Girls Section at Dorking Rugby Club was set up about 4 years ago and initially had about a dozen girls playing touch on a Sunday morning. The number of girls playing has increased steadily over the years and we now have about 75 girls aged between 9 and 18 playing on a regular basis.
As a club we believe in the importance of sport, not just from a health point of view but also from a social perspective. I think this is particularly important for girls. Obesity is on the rise and 1 in 4 teenage girls are now known to have some form of mental health issue whether it be depression, anxiety, anorexia etc. Rugby is a really inclusive sport in that respect - it doesn't matter what size or shape they are, whether they can run fast or not, there's a position for them and they get a lot of support and self-respect by being part of a team.
The girls play in age bands and we will be putting out teams in the U18's, U15's, U13's and U11's.
The hardwork that goes into the club comes from dedicated volunteer's and proud parents, its a local club supported by local people. We are hoping to raise enough to buy the girls a full set of match shirts. Any donation will make a big difference to reaching the target.
